Rule of thirds: Why it’s important for your compositions.

Everything is in place. Your set up, your studio, your camera, your models, your assistant, your backdrop, your coffee. Now you only have to place all the elements for the perfect shoot in harmony in your frame: composition is the name of the game, and it is what makes or breaks your whole shoot.

Putting everything in the center is one approach but what you should really do is to follow the rule of thirds. Nothing fancy really, but it is so simple and so elegant that it will make your life so much easier.

What the rule of thirds is? You divide your frame in a grid of three by three. Then you place your subject in the positions that the lines meet, left or right of the center. Many new colleagues place their subjects dead center. There is nothing wrong with that. But if you place your subjects left or right from the center, following the rule of thirds, your composition becomes more attractive and the eye is drawn to the whole composition and not just the center of it. Of course this is subjective! You and only you know what is the style that you’re going after! But we are here to suggest and explain!

Also the rule of thirds is safer. Even new videographers can create pleasing and interesting compositions, simply by following it. Of course simply start using the rule of thirds is not a magic pill that it will transform your videos on its own. You have to get everything else right, from wardrobe to sound design and everything in between and then use it!
